How to Elope in Ontario

To get married in Ontario, you do not have to be a resident of the province or a Canadian citizen.

You must apply for a marriage licence at the municipal office or city hall and fill out an application in person. You and your partner must have photo identification to prove your current legal name and age. You must be at least 18 years of age, or have written consent of both parents if you are 16 or 17. The fee varies according to municipality. Licence is valid anywhere in Ontario for three months from purchase.

You may have a religious ceremony, performed by an official of a recognized religion, who has received authorization from the office of the Registrar General to marry couples in Ontario. Civil ceremonies may be performed by an Ontario judge, justice of the peace or municipal clerk.

In Ontario, a marriage licence is different from a marriage certificate. Following the ceremony, the couple will be given a Record of Solemnization of Marriage (marriage certificate) from the person who performed the ceremony.

In order to remarry after divorce, (and if you were divorced in Canada) bring the original copy of the final divorce decree, to your local municipal office when you purchase the marriage licence.

Same-sex marriages are legal in Ontario.
