Important Info on How to Elope in the UK

Eloping in the original sense of the word is not possible in England.  A legal requirement for marriage in this country is something called the “Reading of the Banns”, which means that three Sundays prior to the wedding ceremony, a parish priest has to publicly read the names of the couple planning to marry.  Alternatively, if the couple is planning a civil ceremony, a “Notice of Intent” must be posted in the local registry office.  The only way around this requirement is special paperwork from the Archbishop of Canterbury, or the couple can go across the border to an area where this law does not apply.  (Gretna Green in Scotland is an example.)

However, we still recommend eloping in England in the more common sense of the word, which involves having a small, private wedding in a beautiful location, perhaps involving just the bride and groom.  Be sure to thoroughly investigate the legal requirements for this or any other location you may choose to be married and do so at least three months in advance of your intended wedding date.
