How to Legally Elope in NSW

You do not have to be an Australian citizen to get married in Australia.

In a nutshell, the Marriage Act of 1961 applies throughout all states of Australia.  That means you can live anywhere in the country and be legally married in NSW.

One option available to you is the Registry Office Marriage.  The Registry provides marriage vows and ceremony and the whole thing is over and legal in 15 to 20 minutes.  Bookings are available Monday to Friday and some areas allow for Friday evenings, Saturdays and some Sundays by special arrangement.  Total costs are between $400 and $510 depending on date and time.

What is NOIM?

Both bride and groom must post a Notice of Intent To Marry at a registry office at least ONE MONTH before the ceremony. You may also give this document to your Marriage Celebrant (the person who is legally authorized to marry you) It is valid for 18 months, and an interview is required.  You must both bring your birth certificate, and if you were born overseas, you may also need to present your overseas passport.

You must be over the age of 18 and not directly related to each other, and may be required to show proof of dissolution of a previous marriage.
