Eloping in Alabama - Need to Know Info

To get married in Alabama, you will need a valid driver’s license or birth certificate and Social Security number as identification. You do not have to be a resident of Alabama to get married there, and there are no tests or waiting periods. However, some counties (such as Mobile) may require a non-resident to wait three days after obtaining the license to have the ceremony, so be sure to do your due diligence well in advance.

If you have been divorced within the last six months, you must show a copy of the Divorce Decree. There is a 60-day waiting period after a divorce is finalized before you can remarry.

The cost of a marriage licence varies between counties from about $43 to about $63. If you are under 18 years of age, a certified copy of your birth certificate and the presence of BOTH parents or legal guardian is required.

The licence is good for 30 days and only within the State of Alabama.

You are not required to change your last name. A licensed minister or pastor of any religious society may act as officiant, as long as they are in accordance with the rules of the religious society. Current or retired Alabama judges may also perform the ceremony.

Proxy and same-sex marriages are not legal, but cousin-marriages are.
